Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge McDuck: His Life and Times
Published in Hardcover by Celestial Arts (November, 1987)
Authors: Carl Barks and Edward Summer
Average review score:

An homage to Barks
I am writing this within just a few days of one of the saddest days any comic book fan could imagine. Carl Barks has just passed on to that great Duckburg in the sky. This book is, without a doubt, the definitive tribute to a man whose genius is just now being recognized by many.

As you read these outstanding adventure stories - and that's what they are - you will come to know the technique of how this extraordinary man transcended the comic art into the realm of high fiction. Each story is written on two levels, sprinkled with humor and illustrated in such a realistic, yet exaggerated manner that allows the reader to identify strongly with the characters.

My personal favorite is "The Second Richest Duck." In this story, Scrooge, Donald and "the boys" have their true personalities come out with a richness found only in the best writings of major adventure authors and is the equal, at least, to the best Indiana Jones or James Bond story.

I read these stories to my son as he was growing up and promised him the book for his future children. My daughters now each have their own families and the stories are now read by me to my grandchildren. Truly, this tome is part of our family heritage.

I own the hardcover, coffee table edition with a signed, numbered print by Barks. I shall never part with the print, and will hand it down to my son in my estate.

Thank you Carl, for many hours of delicious reading pleasure and the exercise of my imagination. If I could rate this book an infinite number of stars, I would.

Comprehensive and Entertaining !!
This is a fantastic book, covering Scrooge McDuck's life from his days in the Klondike to space travel and flying saucers. The book contains many of my favorite stories including "The Second Richest Duck" and "Land of the Pygmy Indians". There is extensive written material about and by Carl Barks giving much insight into the man behind the duck. Finally, there is a checklist of the comics in which Uncle Scrooge appeared from 1952 to 1988. All in all, this book is a "must-have" for any serious fan of Uncle Scrooge.

The Duckman at his Finest
One of the best collections of comic art ever published, this superlative volume not only takes eleven of Carl Barks' best book-length Scrooge adventures, adds an original story and includes his own comments on each, but Peter Ledger's recoloring makes these stories look better than they ever have or ever will. The only flaw with the volume is that it will send you into a frenzy to read more about Scrooge...but thankfully, Gladstone Comics has all the stories still in print. Simply superb.

17th Summer

Authors: Maureen Daly and Maureen Daley

enjoyable
You will have to laugh! I read this great book while in highschool. That was about 1950-51. I've always had a very tender spot in my heart for the book. That was my era and a familiar story. Now I want it for my granddaughter. She is twelve and as today's times are much ahead of mine, she will love it.It is a very appropriate and tender love story of youth!

Wonderful journey to romance...
This book is delicate and softly written. I loved it. The author took me through a wonderful journey to romance. It was a thrill to "feel the cool wind of the lake". I haven't read this book in a long time because unfortunately, I lost it, and yet I feel it has always stayed with me. It's a shame it's not out on bookstores. -Wendy Hernandez

Sweet memories of first love
Ms. Daly has superbly captured the moments of first love in this delightfully written book. Angie is a seventeen year old young woman, blossoming on the verge of a first time relationship with the adorable, star basketball player Jack. Being as inexperienced as she is with dating, she is a breath of fresh air. This book will take you back to your own first teenage romance. Ms. Daly makes you remember why you never forget your first love. Make it a tradition, as I do each year, to celebrate this wonderfully written book. Read it each summer and winsomely remember

Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (04 April, 2000)
Authors: Maud Hart Lovelace and Lois Lenski
Average review score:

fine and readable even for french childs
I bought this book for two french childs to test american literature with young non-english-spoken childs. I must admit I read it before. It's out of time and pleasant for anyone. But it's readable for any child around the planet.

This goes for all the "Betsy" books
When Maud Hart Lovelace first wrote the "Betsy-Tacy" series, did she know how much so many people, from children to adults, would love them? The series has at least one book that anyone of any age can relate to. 10-year-olds will love "Over the big Hill," high-schoolers will love the books about when Betsy was attending Deep Valley High, etc. And it doesn't end there! Even if you're not the age that Betsy was in one of the books, you can still love all of them! Maud has a way of capturing real feelings and experiences--even bad ones--and turning them into works of art. The "Betsy-Tacy" series really is a work of art, even if it was painted with a pen, not a paintbrush.

A celebration of American life
This is my personal favorite of the Betsy-Tacy series (although picking a favorite is akin to naming your favorite child). It chronicles a pivotal year for Betsy, Tacy and Tib, when they finally have "two numbers in their age". Betsy prophesizes that their tenth year marks the beginning of great things for the trio, like falling in love and traveling the world.

Providentially, the handsome young Alphonso the Thirteenth is crowned King of Spain, giving the girls a convenient target for their first crush. While busily writing a love letter to their idol, the three stumble upon a colony of Syrian immigrants, who aren't always treated so well by their neighbors in Deep Valley. Betsy, Tacy and Tib proceed to make many new friends and learn a few lessons about prejudice and the American dream in the process.

MHL's gift for weaving together uplifting moral lessons with high-spirited adventure makes this a truly special book. She always somehow manages to get across a spiritual message without being heavy-handed, sentimental, or pedantic. Above all, her books are great fun and a pleasure to read.

Golden Kite Award Honor Book
This book was named the Golden Kite Award Honor Book for picture text for 2001 by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. It was also named a Notable Book in the Language Arts by the National Council of Teachers of English.

A special book
My mother loved to garden and this book makes me think of her. It's a beautiful story for children, but also a special book to give to adults who have recently lost someone. The illustrations are just beautiful.

A moving story
This is a beautifully illustrated and touching story to share with kids - and other adults, too. I'm a teacher and I really appreciated the information about bluebirds that is included.

Canoe Days
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (09 March, 1999)
Authors: Gary Paulsen and Ruth Wright Paulsen
Average review score:

Dreamy!
I love books that combine beautiful artwork with rich text. This is a winner in my mind! The words and pictures in this book make you feel like you're right there in the canoe, feeling and seeing all that the author describes. A dreamy little ride I'll enjoy taking again and again!

Canoe Days is entrancing!
Opening this book is like getting into a canoe, taking up a paddle & gliding out into the beauty of a small lake for a day of peace & pleasure where the water & sky are one. Where neighborly deer, heron, mallards, foxes & raccoons come down to the water. A wonderful gift!

Canoe Days
This book takes the reader on a canoe ride across a lake where many animals and types of fish are encountered. Paulens's word choices are excellent. It has excellent color illustrations and is highly recommended for 3rd and 4th graders.

The Coast of Summer: Sailing New England Waters from Shelter Island to Cape Cod
Published in Paperback by Sheridan House (April, 1999)
Author: Anthony Bailey
Average review score:

The Coast of Summer
This delightful account of a summer of sailing along the Southern New England coast is a must-read for any cruising sailor or sailor wannabe. It is the story of the normal events of coastal cruising, from anchoring to meeting old friends ashore, from monitoring the weather to cooking on board, told in a prose which flows as easily as the tides. The personal memories and reflections, and the historical notes on the many harbors along the route, are as thoroughly engrossing as the 80-foot waves, pirates, and seamonsters of most adventure books. Perhaps it is the reality of planning such a cruise for yourself that makes the book even more captivating than the more unlikely tales of life-threatening ordeals in violent seas. This book informs, entertains, and gratifies almost as well as the sea, itself.

Best book on the area
I am now reading this book for the 4th time. You easly place yourself rght in the cockpit with them. Going day to day, harbor to harbor. A must read !!!!!

Absolutely essential to get a sailor through the winter
Anthony Bailey has somehow bottled up the smell and feel of July and August on the waters between Cape Cod and the tip of Long Island, an archipelago not only of little islands, but welcoming harbors, sandy beaches and private coves - not to mention fascinating histories. The Coast of Summer is like the first sip of a cool drink after a day's sail, the anchor set and the boat made secure for the night. Every cruising sailor stores these moments away forever.

Read it in the winter when snow on city streets has turned black as the early night, or, even better, read it in the cabin of your own boat on a rainy day with your feet up on the settee, your back against a cushion and everything dry and comfortable below, your vessel yielding gently back and forth to the weather.

Read it, for that matter, anywhere you want to - but read it.

Como Lograr Sistemas Financieros Solidos Y Seguros En America Latina
Published in Paperback by IDB Bookstore (01 July, 1998)

Average review score:

Delia Smith's Summer Collection
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 August, 2000)
Authors: Delia Smith and Peter Knab
Average review score:

Delia - Oh why do you stay in England?
Delia, oh Delia. The woman who taught me how to make toast! (I was actually making it wrong all these years...) Delia is one of those television personalities who you really would like to have as a friend. Her books are extremely personable and can literally be read aloud - gives you that "Delia is in the house" feeling. The Summer and Winter Collections are Superb books. Also check out How to Cook One and Two. Excellent. Now, where can I buy the How to Cook video collection?

Wonderful!
You have to try the Roasted Peppers recipe - it's easy and I continually impress all dinner guests with the simple dish. The Chicken Basque is delicious and although the fresh fruit terrine needs 24 hours to finish, it tastes great, looks delicious and impresses everyone. It is my favourite cookbook!

This Cook Book Works!
If you are frustated by reading colourful and glossy recipes that turn out disasterous the delicious Delia is for you. Her recipes always work. Her UK television programme back room staff ensure that, as most if not all are demonstrated on TV, and even the most acknowledged cooks in the UK will tell you that it will, yes will, work the first time. My wife, a proffesional cook, makes no excuse for always having her volumes at hand for that sudden emergancy. Typical of the main stream of modern British cuisine in the mid 1990s, full of the feeling and flavours of that oh so elusive English Summer.

Donna Summer: An Unauthorized Biography
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Co (Juv Trd) (May, 1983)
Authors: Jim Haskins, J. M. Stifle, and James Haskins
Average review score:

very interesting
i found this book at a public library 15 years ago and it is still there. i believe this book was written for preteen or teen because it was pretty thick and full of photos. it mostly covered summer's career up to 1983. i am a early donna summer fan and i really do not care for anything past the mid eighties so this book was a gem. i read it four times and i wish that i could have my own copy. it was that great.

Not the last dance
The authors present a refreshing and accurate story about a very real Donna. The story really shows how driven and talented the superstar is and how she worked very hard to develop her talent despite external influences. Overall, the message the reader is left with is that Donna has always had a great deal of integrity. A lot of insight is given to the earlier stages of her life as a child, teenager, and young adult in Europe, all of which formed the foundation for her phenomenal success. A great read that ends way too soon. A sequel is definitely in order. Read this book and everything you ever thought about Donna will be turned on its ear.

Tells The Story behind the Star and her Artistry
In this short, compelling book, Haskins tells the life story of Diva Donna Summer; from her humble beginnings as a child in Boston, singing in the Grant AME Baptist church and dreaming of stardom, to her budding musical theatre career in Germany, her first success with "Love To Love You Baby", her loves, aspirations and most of all, music. This book separates myth from fact and shows the reader the true person underneath the trappings of stardom. Donna Summer, touted as a sex goddess was really a shy, private person who knew she was going to be a star but wasn't prepared for the stress and pressure of a mega career. But Summer overcomes the obstacles and in the 80's begins towards a new watermark. The only flaw with this book is it ends in 1982; that was just the beginning for Donna. She won the Grammy in 98 for Best Dance Song, "Carry On" and she's mounting a musical play based on her life, "Ordinary Girl". But alas, you won't read any of these newer developments in Haskins book.

The Dragon That Ate Summer
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group Juv (May, 1992)
Author: Brenda Seabrooke
Average review score:

The Dragon That Ate Summer
This book is a very good book because it really makes you feel that you are really in the story with the characters. This book is about a boy named Alastair. He found a blue baby dragon in his mother's petunia garden. Alastair called this baby dragon, 'Spike'. He takes care of Spike and hides him from his family because his sister says that she is allergic to animals so if she figures out that Alatair has a pet in the house, she will tell her parents and he would get in big trouble. The part when Alastair disguises Spike as a dog for the evening walk was kind of funny. I really recomand this book to people who likes to read fiction-dragon books.

I wish it were true!
This kid, Alastair. He broke his arm and can't go to summer camp with his friends! Bummer. So, he wandering around his backyard, and finds a little dragon in his mothers flowerbed! Talk about a stroke of luck! He doesn't tell anyone. Would you? Uh, yah, hey mom, I found a dragon eating you petunias... yeah right! Now, this dragon really keeps him busy! Eventually, he tels his friend. But will everyone else find out too? Find out! It's so good, I've read it a couple of times myself :o)

Delightful!
Often sequels are not as good as the original but THE CARE AND FEEDING OF DRAGONS is every bit as funny and enjoyable as its predecessor THE DRAGON THAT ATE SUMMER! The same cast (including the hilarious boxer, Gruesome) returns, joined this time by a teacher who is a dragon, Alastair's schoolmates, and a pair of ineffectual dragonappers. With the help of his best friend Josh, Alastair foils the dragonappers and inches toward learning to think before acting. The personality of Spike the dragon deepens - is he beginning to grow, too? This reader hopes there will be more adventures of these characters!
